Mutant Babies webcomic launches on The Entertainment Experiment

We are a whole lot of psyched to announce that our new Escape From Jesus Island spinoff webcomic, Mutant Babies, will be available for free TOMORROW (Jan. 4) on The Entertainment Experiment. Here’s everything you need to know…

What is Mutant Babies? MB is a monthly webcomic chronicling the adventures of the mutants from Escape From Jesus Island as adorable, murderous toddlers. Under the guidance of the baby Antichrist, this crew of cuddly cannibals launches a series of increasingly ridiculous escape attempts.

The series is illustrated by Peeter Parkker, who lettered our first three issues before shifting focus to bringing Mutant Babies to life. It features original tales in the Escape From Jesus Island story world from myself (Shawn French) and has the whole crew of mutants cooked up by Mortimer Glum. And as always, editor/letterer/webmonkey/mutant-wrangler Shawn Greenleaf has the impossible task of trying to keep the misfits in the Wisdumb crew in line.

Screen Shot 2016-01-03 at 1.26.08 PM

Where and when can I read Mutant Babies? The first installment will be available Jan. 4 on The Entertainment Experiment, a kickass site that features Maine-made web content. Each story will be released in three parts, with a new chunk of wrong dropping on the first Monday of each month, henceforth known as Mutant Babies Monday.

How did this insanity come to be? While preparing our first Kickstarter campaign for Escape From Jesus Island, series co-creator Mortimer Glum and I had a running joke coming up with our weirdest ideas for variant issues. A Christmas issue where Jesus and the Antichrist battle Krampus, etc. One of the favorites was a bloody parody of Muppet Babies, with pint-sized versions of the mutants from EFJI wreaking havoc in adorably homicidal ways.

We decided to leave it to fate, so we listed Mutant Babies as a stretch goal. If we passed our crowdfunding goal by more than 50%, we’d do a Mutant Babies story. We did, so now we are.

Peeter Parkker’s art style is such a perfect fit for the Mutant Babies world. Once we saw his designs for these demonic rugrats and the scripts started coming together, we expanded our original plans from a one-off to an ongoing webcomic. This is just too weird and fun and wrong to only do once.

So join us for this bizarre new adventure. All the carnage; half the height!

Follow us on Facebook and watch EntertainmentExperiment.com on Monday, Jan. 4 for Episode 1 of Mutant Babies!

Yeshua Cosplay Photo Shoot!

Posted by Jesus Island comics on July 26, 2015
Posted in: Spotlight. Tagged: antichrist, cosplay, EFJI, glamour and gore fx, Yeshua. Leave a comment

Sweet unholy mother of God, this is kickass. Ahahahaha! Oh sorry, where was I? Oh yes. Feast your eye sockets on the first Yeshua cosplay images!

YESHUAThis awesomeness comes courtesy of Mary Meissinger, Jazhua Vanboven and TJ Breyer at Baltimore-based Glamour and Gore. This team has previously done cosplay shoots of Pavi from Repo! The Genetic Opera and original characters inspired by American Horror Story. I asked Mary about what it was about EFJI that inspired her team to bring Yeshua to life.

“The idea of this island of deformed clones of Christ is just mind-blowing… this is one of the most unique and well executed stories I’ve ever read. As a huge DC comics fan, I have always enjoyed them because of the complex stories of their villains. The Joker, Scarecrow, Bane, Deathstroke, Brainiac, Sinestro and the Mad Hatter just to name a few. These villainous characters although evil are what keeps readers like me interested. See the good guys are simple, but the bad guys sometimes you don’t know what they want, or even if you do they way they bring about terror and destruction puts you on the edge of your seat. Yeshua is that villain for me! Sure, you’re rooting for the other side, but secretly you want Yeshua to bring about the Apocalypse just so you can watch the chaos unfold on the pages in front of you.”

Yeshua cosplay

“This cosplay was intense to say the least. Mortimer’s artwork is DETAILED!” Mary said. “As an artist myself the task to bring such a creature to life was a bit staggering. We decided to go with something a little more derived from Mortimer’s artwork rather than make it an exact clone (pun intended). We gave Yeshua very dark features to try and convey some of that darkness inside him. Dark set eyes, very dark contouring of his face and features. His three scars at the top of his head were a must. His muscular features were provided by our model TJ . His hair was glued on with Ben Nye Spirit Gum and his robe was custom made from white linen fabric and good old homeland soil! Prop work was done by Josh and his boyfriend Tom who is an electrician by trade and bent some different types of wire to create the barb wire Yeshua dons on his arms. The fangs were an old FX trick of filing fake nails down in to a custom set of fangs then placed with good old fashioned Fixodent!”

Ginormous thanks to Mary and the Glamour and Gore crew for bringing Yeshua to life! If you’re in the Baltimore area and need the services of a kickass makeup and FX artist, drop Mary a note here.

Happy New Year from EFJI!

Happy New Year from your twisted friends at Escape From Jesus Island!

EFJI New Years

Shawn French here, the guy who writes this freakshow on wheels. We have a lot in store for you folks in 2015. We’ve replaced Mortimer Glum’s dying computer and drawing tablet and he’s back up and running… er, rolling. He’s now working with a tablet that is double the size of his old one and the results are amazing. Check out this panel!

Helicopter crashThe artwork for Episode 3 is rolling in steadily. This morning, I woke up to a new page, plus a rough cut of a double splash page. Things get a whole lot of crazy in our next installment.

The lion’s share of my time lately has been spent co-designing the EFJI mobile game alongside veteran designer Eric Pavone. Eric is a fucking rockstar and we’re thrilled to be working with him. If you’ve ever held a game controller, you’ve probably played one of his games.

Eric games 1

Eric games 2

The EFJI mobile game will be an old-school dungeon crawler that serves as a prequel to our comics. You’ll control a teenage Antichrist and three freaks you design in our Mutant Creation Lab on a quest to free the captive mutant test subjects on Malsum Island.

Here are hyperlinks to stories about the EFJI game from some of our favorite horror and comic book sites. Dread Central, Comic Bastards, The Blood Shed

Mutant Babies mockup

We’re also working on our Mutant Babies web comic, illustrated by EFJI letterer Peeter Parkker. These will be a series of short stories featuring the wacky, homicidal adventures of the baby Antichrist and his mutant pals. Heavily inspired by Muppet Babies, Animaniacs and Pinky & The Brain, this one’s going to be a whole lot of fun. Peeter’s style of art is so perfect for this type of project. I can’t wait to get this one up and running. To the right are concept images for the babies Christ and Antichrist. We’ll be rolling out concept images for the rest of his mutant pals very soon.

Nicolas Genovese Sculpture is also creating a full line of 12(!) Escape From Jesus Island gaming miniatures. We are a whole lot of psyched about getting these bad boys manufactured and ready to roll in the new year. You can see the first four sculpts (Inquisition, Yeshua, Goliath/Palsy and Meatwagon) below.

Our editor, Shawn Greenleaf, is also working on the base design for an EFJI tabletop game, which will be all kinds of epic. Much more to come about that as he gets further into development.

In short, 2015 is shaping up to be a monster year for our demented little comic and we’re psyched to have you with us for this adventure. Strap in, kiddies!

Danielle Hartigan is Mother Superior!

Posted by Jesus Island comics on October 1, 2014
Posted in: Uncategorized. 1 Comment

When we launched our Kickstarter campaign, we offered up many featured cameos as well as three MAJOR roles in our story to our backers. The One Who Got Away reward was snagged by Dave Rambo, who will appear as ReGen Corp’s Head of IT. Yeshua’s bodyguard Inquisition will be played by backer Steven N. Long. The third role, that of the Antichrist’s unholy abbess Mother Superior, went unclaimed… until now.

The Wisdumb team is thrilled to welcome Danielle Hartigan to the cast of Escape From Jesus Island!

Screen Shot 2014-09-30 at 10.15.15 AM

Our own Mortimer Glum will be transforming Danielle into Yeshua’s moral compass. Look for a redesigned face coming soon to a Mother Superior near you!

In flashbacks, we’ll see Danielle pre-transformation as Nurse Hartigan, the pious ReGen Corp worker responsible for putting down the failed test subjects. When we join the story in Episode 1, Nurse Hartigan has already been in Yeshua’s clutches for two years and has undergone a radical metamorphosis. The good Mother will make her first appearance in Episode 4.

Mother Superior has always been one of my absolute favorite characters in EFJI. When the story has fully played out, I think this will be the one role people will be blown away that we offered up to a fan. Welcome to the horde, Danielle!

If you missed out on our Kickstarter and want to be a character in Escape From Jesus Island, we are making the last few unclaimed roles in our story available to fans, starting at $150. Details coming soon!

Contest: EFJI Scavenger Hunt!

Posted by Jesus Island comics on September 18, 2014
Posted in: contests. Tagged: antichrist, comics, contest, EFJI, horror, Jesus island, scavenger hunt. Leave a comment

Both issues of Escape From Jesus Island are now on ComiXology and the crew wanted to do something a little different to celebrate. Introducing our first EFJI Scavenger Hunt!

The real beauty of ComiXology is their Guided View layout, where each panel fills an entire screen and you move panel by panel with the arrow keys. It gives the story more of a cinematic feel. It also lets you see the ton of little details that Mortimer Glum hides in the background of his panels, stuff that often gets lost in print. Which brings us to our contest…

Escape From Jesus Island, Episode 1 Scavenger Hunt!

comictemplate3a [Converted]

Here’s how it works:
Hidden in the pages of our FIRST issue (A STAB in the Dark) are all the items listed below. I put together this list using Guided View, so all of these items are clearly visible if reading us on ComiXology. You can order EFJI on ComiXology here: www.comixology.com/Escape-From-Jesus-Island-1/digital-comic/96094

2) Rick-rolling warning

3) The Malleus Maleficarum

4) Die Screaming logo

5) Red eyes in the dark

6) Rage Quit panda logo

7) Seven ReGen Corp logos

8) “If you can read this, it’s too late to save you.”

9) “Admissions (of sin)”

10) “God will put an end to this” in Latin

11) “Free Kandy”

12) “Do Not Feed The Mutants”

13) “0 Days Without Incident”

Questions:

Q1) What extension do ReGen Corp employees call in an emergency?

Q2) In which wing is Toxicology?

Q3) What is the total number of warning signs (including graffiti) that the STAB kids ignore?

PRIZE: Mortimer Glum will create for you a hand drawn sketch featuring your choice of Escape From Jesus Island characters! You’ll also receive a Scavenger Hunt Winner credit in Episode 3!

TO ENTER: For the thirteen hidden items, record the pages and panel numbers where you found the item/phrases. Send that list, along with the answer to the three questions to EFJILetters@gmail.com. The winner will be randomly selected from among the correct entries.

Design A Mutant winners!

Posted by Jesus Island comics on September 7, 2014
Posted in: contests. Tagged: comics, contest, mutant. Leave a comment

Sweet Christ on a stick, we received a great collection of entries for our first EFJI Design A Mutant contest. This was an extraordinarily difficult decision. So much so that we couldn’t decide on a single winner. So we’re picking two. There are also several other entries we liked a whole, whole lot and may try to find a use for down the road. In those cases, we’ll contact the person who submitted and offer them the full prize, along with the other winners.

Criteria: We were looking for interesting designs that were the best possible fit for our story world. Ultimately, that’s what led us to our two winners. Both are mutants that would fit seamlessly into the EFJI-verse. Without further adieu…

Winner #1
Shadow Stalker by Jazhua Vanboven

“It lives in the bowels of the asylum. This mutation has caused him to be partially blind. He still has excellent night vision. His skin is dry and coarse because during the day he lives beneath floors and dirt. To feed, all he must do is simply reach up from the decrepit earth and snatch his victim whole, pulling them into the earth where they suffocate slowly.
His weakness: sunlight.”

ShadowStalker

Shadow Stalker fits the EFJI story beautifully and will make a fine addition to the mutant horde.Look for Shadow Stalker to make his first appearance in Episode 4 of Escape From Jesus Island. Congrats, Jazhua!

Winner #2

Abaddon by Eddey Gallegos

This one is a little tricky (and a big part of the reason it took so long to nail down our winners). Eddey’s entry is a great fit for a bit later on in our story, but revealing what he submitted would constitute a spoiler. So we’ll just say that Eddey’s submission is fantastic and we’ll get our first glimpse of Abaddon at the very end of Act One (Episode 8).

Honorable Mentions

Unholy Thing by JoJo Picone

We loved the creativity behind this entry from one of our hardest working young fans. You can (and should!) check out Jojo’s comic Sons of God here.

unholy, efji mutant no.3

Cymothea by Alysa Avery

“I wanted to draw a mutant that would creep (me) out, so I went with a theme that literally gives me the shivers: parasites. This lovely creature’s name is Cymothea.”
We loved this entry a whole lot, but ultimately decided it was a bit too out there for this stage of the story. We may be in touch later on in the series, Alysa. This is a great design.

Screen Shot 2014-07-17 at 6.14.34 PM

Darwin by Kevin Cuffe

Darwin is another entry we really liked and may revisit a bit later in the story.

“Name: Darwin

They say all life began in the ocean. Scientists took the DNA of Christ and mixed with DNA from the sea, creating the abomination that is Darwin. As they are on an island, what better way to keep the island secure than with a semi-cannibalistic ( Jesus made many fish out of a few and was a “fisher of men” ) water-breathing monstrosity?
Damien immediately saw the value in keeping such a valuable mutant in his army. Escape by sea? Not likely, plus all those folks with a fish with legs on their car, they were right too! Creationism or Evolution? Students shouldn’t have to choose and neither should EFJI fans, give them both with DARWIN!

What sets this mutant apart is the fact that it’s Jesus mutated with various forms of aquatic life.

I’m imagining Tentacles for hair, jellyfish stingers for a beard slightly scaled silver skin, blank shark-like eyes and rows of teeth (they could be creepy like an Angler fish with a severe underbite or huge like a shark). These would be used to brutally masticate prey. Several designs could work for hands from webbed with slight claws to one hand having a Claw. Angled protrusions for fins at the elbows and on his heels. Legs should be functional for both land and water.

The mutations serve the following functions:
Beard like stinger appendages paralyze prey (jellyfish mutation)
Octopi “hair” tentacles hold victim in place so that those vicious teeth rend flesh from bone.
Starfish-like regeneration, appendages and limbs regenerate but torso does not.
Ink secretion like an octopus (mutation useful in water only) this helps him confuse prey/ allows him to get in there in to get a grip on them.
Gills for water breathing.

Some design notes:
I always wanted to say brutally masticate, thank you for the opportunity!
Maybe a stingray stinger appendage or a dorsal fin like a swordfish.
I was thinking give him a net (playing on the Jesus recruiting Peter tale) and a harpoon, this guy needs to be up close to really do his worst, these tools allow him to do that.
The backstory on the harpoon and net is that he secured them from a whaling vessel that strayed too close to the island.”

Thanks for the great entry, Kevin!

Santa by Armistead Owen

“Say hello to Santa! or St. Nick or Nikki, or whatever works.  Not much in powers except really fat with a nasty-looking white, pus-filled tumor of a chin that sorta resembles a beard.  He also has an extra third eye growing out oh his head that can tell if you are naughty or nice.  And if you are naughty, Santa will eat ya.”

santa

If we ever do a Christmas one-shot, I could definitely see this critter making an appearance. We may be in touch, Owen.

Muscle & Brain by Ninna Hellman

We can always count on Ninna for kickass submissions to our contest and this time was no different. Introducing Muscle & Brain.
img372

“Something went wrong with this clone. Its spine continued to grow out of the back, like a tail, and measures about 1.5 meter long with a skull at the other end, growing another mutant, which I call The Brain. The Brain only has a skull, two little arms and a long spine that is fused with Muscle’s spine.
It is the Brain that is doing all the thinking, and the Muscle does all that the Brain is saying to him.
The Muscle can’t think by himself. But he can remember.
During the mutation Muscle lost one of his muscular arms, too bad…

The Brain is all evil and always thinks dark thoughts.
The Muscle wants to be good, but don’t know how to be that, because he cannot think.
In his face you can see that he is scared, always scared of what the Brain says and demands.
If the Muscle should kill the Brain, the whole mutant dies. And that is what the Brain is reminding the Muscle of all the time. The Brain doesn’t think that Muscle can remember, but he can, and that is Muscle’s secret.”

Baby-face John (by 10-year-old Ella Draper)

Thanks for the great entry, Ella!

“His mutations include a worm for a mouth which he uses to feel his way around, for he is blind. The growth serum did not reach his head as the worm blocked its progress up his body. So he has an overlarge baby head and a normal-sized adult body.
He cannot speak with his mouth but has the ability to telepathically communicate with the other failed clones. Yeshua keeps him as he thinks he is cute (in an evil way) and keeps him as a son/pet for his own amusement and to freak people out (a bit like a freakish bodyguard).”

BAbY_FacE_JOhN

Unnamed Brando Blob by Nicolas Genovese

This one cracks me right the hell up. Thanks, Nic!

“Basically it is an obese man’s upper half with a twisted slug-like lower half made of knotted feet and legs. Some could be bulging and breaking through the raggedy leftover clothing, and its creation was similar to that of a bonsai shrub as the fetus with many stitched on legs grew the doctors would rewire the legs together in a knotted formation so they would grow all together like a rope but messier.

So this “bonsai rope” of  legs and feet makes up the waist down and there would be metal ring-like clasps with bolts about thigh-length down and calf-length down holding them tightly together. It moves like an awkward snake. The upper half would be a fat lumpy-looking humanoid body with two extra (useless) arms stitched to the sides. However these arms are in the straight jacket that he is wearing, so it looks like his arms are in the sleeves when in fact the useable arms are waiting crossed behind his back with two blades for his next victim. The face would have a similar look like Marlon Brando, sly look, squinty eyes and a pronounced chin.

Crown of Thorns mutant by Robert (Greywolf) Webber Chipman

“A crown of thorns he did wear for all to see, this King of the Jews…
Thorns you see, now a shroud, this Son of godless men… what a prick…

When created, this mutation had some of the cell structure from the crown of thorns mixed into his DNA… his crown of thorns sits upon his head and tendrils grow down and throughout his body like roots… long, wicked curved thorns protruding throughout his body, unnaturally long arms, branchlike vines ending in long fingers tipped with curved thorns for fingernails. Thorns for teeth.”

A very clever, nightmarish design. Great entry, Robert!

Michelangelo by Bryan Sinagra (one of the faces of Pariah)

And we close with this kickass entry, submitted as a story. We may very well find a way for a version of this effect to be used in the comic. We’ll be in touch if we decide to go that way, Bryan. What a cool, crazy design and backstory. We loved this one.

When ReGen started making headway in their program, they were a bit overzealous in keeping subjects alive with the hopes that problems with the subjects would work themselves out.

For example, Subject #1496 showed promise, until he required dialysis machines to filter his kidneys as well as one for his heart. Laying face down it was easier to monitor the tubes that protruded from his upper and lower back. He wheezed a laboring breath in concordance with the machine.

Their faith waned in Subject #1496 when the wheezing stopped. Well, all breathing ceased. A nurse was instructed to pull the plug. The nurse turned off the machine, but not before she noticed the arms that hung off the sides the gurney. Well, not the arms, but more the hands. They had contorted into elongated fingers with clear claws. She looked a little closer, the claws had some sort of fluid in them. Her shuttering at the grotesque features brought her back to the task at hand. The machine was off, now it was time to remove the tubes. She pulled back the sheet and gasped. The skin of Subject #1496 had fused and grew around the tubes. She tapped it and when there was no reaction she grasped the tube in her hand and pulled.

A groan escaped Subject #1496 and a wheezing words escaped his mouth. “Don’t….do…that. Do…not.” He then slowly rose from the gurney. “Why?” He whispered. “Why do you… wake me… from… my slumber…”

The nurse was horror stricken as she looked on, #1496’s face contorted with protruding glass-like fangs as his mouth opened wider than humanly possible. “I!..I!.I!.I.I.Please! Please! They! They sent me in! I didn’t!”

Without any warning, he lunged forward grabbing the nurse’s waist with his hands and plunging his fingers through her uniform and flesh. She let out a startled scream which quickly became a gurgle when his face shot forward sinking his fangs in to her neck and collarbone. Blood ran up into his fingertips, fingers and could be seen running through the veins of his arms. He drank deeply.

A few seconds within, his back twitched. The tubes ripped away from the machine and started to whip around the room like mad snakes. Blood, the nurses blood, spewed and sprayed out of the tubes painting the wall behind him in gore. She faded away, watching her blood spray all over the room.

A few levels down in the bowels of Regen, Yeshua’s eyes widened as his senses picked up the birth of one of his disciples. “Michelangelo has awoken…”

Our resident writer, Shawn French, attempted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. It did not go well.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a brutal fucking disease. If you’re in a position to make a donation to the ALS Association, please do. You can find them at ALSA.org. Thanks!
