Sweet unholy mother of God, this is kickass. Ahahahaha! Oh sorry, where was I? Oh yes. Feast your eye sockets on the first Yeshua cosplay images!
This awesomeness comes courtesy of Mary Meissinger, Jazhua Vanboven and TJ Breyer at Baltimore-based Glamour and Gore. This team has previously done cosplay shoots of Pavi from Repo! The Genetic Opera and original characters inspired by American Horror Story. I asked Mary about what it was about EFJI that inspired her team to bring Yeshua to life.
“The idea of this island of deformed clones of Christ is just mind-blowing… this is one of the most unique and well executed stories I’ve ever read. As a huge DC comics fan, I have always enjoyed them because of the complex stories of their villains. The Joker, Scarecrow, Bane, Deathstroke, Brainiac, Sinestro and the Mad Hatter just to name a few. These villainous characters although evil are what keeps readers like me interested. See the good guys are simple, but the bad guys sometimes you don’t know what they want, or even if you do they way they bring about terror and destruction puts you on the edge of your seat. Yeshua is that villain for me! Sure, you’re rooting for the other side, but secretly you want Yeshua to bring about the Apocalypse just so you can watch the chaos unfold on the pages in front of you.”
“This cosplay was intense to say the least. Mortimer’s artwork is DETAILED!” Mary said. “As an artist myself the task to bring such a creature to life was a bit staggering. We decided to go with something a little more derived from Mortimer’s artwork rather than make it an exact clone (pun intended). We gave Yeshua very dark features to try and convey some of that darkness inside him. Dark set eyes, very dark contouring of his face and features. His three scars at the top of his head were a must. His muscular features were provided by our model TJ . His hair was glued on with Ben Nye Spirit Gum and his robe was custom made from white linen fabric and good old homeland soil! Prop work was done by Josh and his boyfriend Tom who is an electrician by trade and bent some different types of wire to create the barb wire Yeshua dons on his arms. The fangs were an old FX trick of filing fake nails down in to a custom set of fangs then placed with good old fashioned Fixodent!”
Ginormous thanks to Mary and the Glamour and Gore crew for bringing Yeshua to life! If you’re in the Baltimore area and need the services of a kickass makeup and FX artist, drop Mary a note here.
